
Garden Projects Create More Rubble Than the House They Belong To
Every garden project has two phases. The first phase is the one you planned — the new decking, the patio extension, the landscaped borders that are going to transform the space. The second phase is the one you didn't plan: what to do with the enormous pile of old materials that now occupies the garden you wanted to transform.
Old decking. Concrete slabs. Excavated soil. Treated timber. Broken paving. The debris-to-improvement ratio in London gardens is reliably higher than anyone anticipates, and the cleanup is invariably someone else's afterthought.
It shouldn't be. Improper disposal of garden and construction waste is the single most common source of fly-tipping in London residential areas — not because people are reckless, but because the legitimate options aren't obvious and the materials are harder to move than they look.
Garden Waste vs. Construction Waste: The Distinction Matters
This isn't bureaucratic pedantry. It's a licensing issue that affects what your collector can legally take.
**Garden waste** — grass clippings, pruned branches, leaves, plant matter, untreated soil — falls under general garden waste regulations. It can be composted, chipped, or processed through standard green waste streams. Most household waste recycling centres accept it; some local authorities collect it separately (often for a small annual fee).
**Construction and demolition waste** — concrete, bricks, tiles, old decking boards, rubble — requires a waste carrier with a specific licence for this material type. Weight matters here too: concrete and rubble are dense, and a pile that looks manageable in the garden can easily exceed 500kg per cubic metre.
If your garden project involves both — clearing plant beds and removing an old patio, say — you're dealing with two distinct waste streams that may require different handling. A collector who says they can take "everything" without specifying their C&D licence is worth questioning further.
The Treated Timber Problem
Old decking is not the same as old timber. Most garden decking installed before 2010 was pressure-treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) — a preservative that prevents rot and insect damage, and also contains arsenic.
CCA-treated timber cannot be burned (toxic fumes), cannot go to general landfill in many areas, and should not be composted. It requires disposal through a specialist waste stream that handles chemically treated wood. The visual distinction between treated and untreated timber isn't reliable — CCA treatment often looks similar to standard weathering.
If your decking is more than ten years old, assume it's treated and arrange disposal accordingly. The cost difference for specialist disposal is modest. The cost of getting it wrong — penalties for illegal disposal or, worse, burning it in a garden fire — is not.
More recent decking may use alternative treatments or composite materials (plastic-wood mixes). Composite decking boards are recyclable in theory but require specific processing facilities and are rarely accepted through general recycling channels. Ask your collector what they can do with composite materials before booking.
Concrete and Rubble: Heavy Means Expensive to Move
Concrete is one of those materials where the quantity is consistently underestimated and the weight is always underestimated more.
A single standard concrete patio slab (600mm x 600mm, 50mm thick) weighs approximately 45-50kg. A 4m x 5m patio has around 30 of them — roughly 1,400kg of concrete before you've dug out any subbase gravel or sand. That's not a job for a standard van or a couple of trips to the tip in a hatchback.
Heavy materials require a vehicle with appropriate load capacity and — crucially — a driver who knows what they're handling. Overloaded vans are a genuine safety risk and an MOT failure. Professional collections for rubble are sized by volume and weight together.
On the positive side, concrete is one of the most recyclable construction materials available. Crushed concrete aggregate is used extensively in road sub-bases and civil engineering projects. A good collector will route your rubble away from landfill and into a recycling stream — reducing the environmental cost and often reducing your disposal cost too.
The Skip vs. Collection Decision
Skips are the default assumption for garden clearances. They're not always the right one.
**Skips make sense when:** You have a sustained multi-day project, a large volume of mixed materials, and the space and permissions for a skip on your driveway or (with a permit) the road outside.
**Collections make sense when:** You have a one-off clearance, the volume doesn't justify a skip's minimum hire, you can't get skip permit approval, or you want the waste removed immediately rather than sitting in the garden for a week.
The London-specific complication is permits. Placing a skip on a public road in London requires a local authority permit — and permit availability, cost, and processing times vary significantly by borough. In some inner-London boroughs, permit waiting times can delay your project by weeks.
For clearances involving a cubic metre or less of material, professional collection is almost always faster, cheaper, and less administratively demanding than a skip. For multi-tonne clearances over an extended period, skips earn their place.
The garden project you planned is the visible result. The clearance you planned for is the invisible prerequisite. Get the disposal sorted before the new materials arrive, not after — because a pile of old concrete at one end of the garden and a delivery of new materials at the other is a London nightmare with no good exit.
