
The Best Recycling Tip Is the One That Removes the Decision
Most recycling advice is well-intentioned and counterproductive. It works by adding to your cognitive load — another list of rules to internalise, another set of categories to remember, another moment of uncertainty at the bin. The result is often worse recycling outcomes, because decision fatigue is real and "when in doubt, chuck it in recycling" is the contamination vector nobody wants to discuss openly.
The evidence is clear: contamination rates in UK recycling are driven largely by aspirational recycling — putting things in the recycling bin in the hope they're recyclable, rather than with certainty they are. An entire load of otherwise correctly sorted recycling can be rejected because of a single incorrect item contaminating the batch. The economics of recycling depend on clean feedstock.
The systems approach to recycling isn't aspirational. It's structural. The goal is to make the right choice automatic rather than deliberate — to design a home or workspace where recycling happens because the path of least resistance is the correct path.
The Five Items Most Commonly Recycled Wrong in London
Getting these five wrong is responsible for a disproportionate share of London's recycling contamination. Knowing them doesn't require memorising a category list — it just requires knowing what to stop putting in the recycling bin.
**Greasy pizza boxes.** Clean cardboard is recyclable. Greasy cardboard is not — the oil contamination interferes with the pulping process and renders the resulting material unusable. A box where the base is greasy (always) but the lid is clean (usually) can be separated: recycle the lid, bin the base. This is not a compromise — it's what actually results in recycled material.
**Black plastic.** Black plastic packaging — common in ready meal trays, meat packaging, and supermarket produce — cannot be sorted by the optical sorting equipment used in most UK recycling facilities. The infrared scanners that identify polymer types don't detect black pigment. Black plastic, in most London boroughs, goes to landfill or incineration even if you put it in the recycling bin. If the packaging is black, it's not recyclable in the standard blue bin.
**Soft plastics.** Carrier bags, cling film, crisp packets, bread bags — these are not recyclable in standard household collections. They jam sorting machinery. They belong in the general waste bin. Many supermarkets have soft plastic return points (in 2025, most major UK supermarkets participate), which is the correct channel for these materials. They do not go in the blue bin.
**Ceramics and pottery.** Ceramics can't be processed in the glass recycling stream because they melt at different temperatures and contaminate recycled glass batches. How to Make Recycling Automatic
The research on behaviour change is consistent: proximity, clarity, and defaults determine what people do far more reliably than knowledge or intention.
**Proximity: Put recycling bins where you generate waste.** The single most impactful change most households can make is adding a small recycling container to the kitchen worktop or under-sink cupboard, directly next to the general waste bin. When recycling requires walking to another room, it doesn't happen as reliably. When it's at the same point of decision as the general bin, the separation rate improves significantly.
**Clarity: Label your bins.** This sounds elementary. It makes a meaningful difference in households with multiple people (flatmates, children, occasional visitors) who may not have internalised the local authority's collection specifics. A simple label with the five or six categories accepted — not a comprehensive list, just the most common correct items — removes the uncertainty that drives aspirational recycling.
**Defaults: Design for correct behaviour.** If a cardboard box of purchases has two bins it could go into, and both are equally accessible, you're relying on deliberate decision-making. If only the recycling bin is close to where boxes are opened, cardboard ends up recycled without requiring a conscious choice. Designing the space makes the default correct.
**Reduce before recycling.** The hierarchy is prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle — in that order. Recycling is good but it is the fourth-best option, not the first. Buying products with less packaging, choosing refillable options where they exist, and extending the life of things you own all reduce the volume entering the waste stream before recycling is relevant. Recycling is the end of the line, not the solution to the line.
The Local Authority Complication
London's recycling is complicated by the fact that what's accepted varies by borough. Lambeth and Lewisham accept different items in their blue bins. What's recyclable in Enfield may not be recyclable in Tower Hamlets. This is a genuine policy failure that creates exactly the uncertainty that drives contamination.

When guidance conflicts, default to the more conservative position — uncertain items go in general waste rather than contaminating a recycling load.
The goal of all this is not recycling-as-virtue-signal. It's clean material recovery at scale. Clean feedstock into recycling facilities creates markets for recycled material. Contaminated loads don't — they go to landfill, making the effort of sorting worthless.
The best recycling habit is the one that's actually correct. Which means the second-best thing you can do for recycling, after learning what actually goes in each bin, is to stop putting things in the recycling bin when you're not sure.
When in doubt, it's not the recycling bin. That's the tip nobody wants to give, but it's the one that actually improves recycling outcomes.
